Answer these 6 Questions for a Successful Detox

In the past, we talked about why supporting your system with a detox may be helpful, especially considering the number of toxins that we are exposed to daily. Which is why for this article, I wanted to skip this part and dive straight into what it takes to successfully detox by answering the following questions:

1.What am I hoping to accomplish from the detox and what’s my realistic goal?

Many people see detox as another diet to quickly lose those extra pounds before a big event. But detox is much more than that. And this thought is what frequently leads people to detox incorrectly. The idea behind a detox is to remove foods that are tough on our bodies and allow our bodies to reboot. Depending on the type of detox, you can even support the body with extra nutrients to help this process. We should remember that the point of a detox is not to deprive your body of calories while only juicing for an entire week. This can be tricky and dangerous because you’re also depriving your body of precious nutrients. Know why you want to detox and set realistic goals that work for you. If your reason to detox is to exclusively lose weight, make sure that you are detoxing the right way.

2.How long do I want to detox for?

This question is very important to answer in order to plan accordingly. Do you want to do a week detox or prolong it for a couple of weeks? If you don’t feel as committed or are giving detox a go for the first time, choose a shorter and simpler detox to test the waters.

3.What level detox are you choosing?

There are certainly different levels of detoxing. One simple way is by simply removing foods that trigger body inflammation such as sugar, gluten, dairy, and processed foods. It’s also important to eat fresh foods and enjoy veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and gluten-free grains for extra nutrients. But you can also choose to additionally support your body with extra nutrients such as B vitamins and amino acids or herbs like milk thistle and dandelion root.

4.Will you be cooking? Eating out?

After you determine your level of detox, decide if you are going to be cooking your meals; or, if that is not possible, make sure to choose restaurants that provide suitable options for your detox. Ideally, it’s always best to cook your meals yourself, since this gives you full control of what you are adding to your meals. But if that is not option, the best way to make sure you succeed is to have a plan. This includes knowing what dishes you can eat in what restaurants. And don’t forget: when you are planning your meals, make sure to also include snack options.

5. Are you including mind and body detox?

Detox is not only about what you eat, but also about the body itself. Did you know that one of the most effective ways to detox is by breaking a sweat? Working out is extremely important not only to tone our muscles and stay fit, but it’s also important to help us get rid of toxins accumulated in our bodies. And taking care of your body also means taking care of the mind. Including meditation sessions and other de-stressing techniques will take your detox to the next level!

6. Do you have a detox buddy or support group?

Lastly, but not least, when you decide to make changes to your diet or lifestyle, it’s always best to have your loved ones on board, so they don’t distract you from your goals. And if you have a detox buddy or support group, even better! There are moments that we may feel like we want to give up and go back, since old habits die hard. This is when having someone to help push on may just be the key to your successful detox!
