Sizing Up Your Pet’s Shampoo Options

Picking out a shampoo and conditioner for you dog can be overwhelming. From choosing the two-in-one conditioner to finding the right shampoo scent, the options can be truly endless. However, there are some simple tips you can use when looking for the right products to lather your dog with.

Tear-less Shampoo

Many people think that a tear-less shampoo is really only for puppies, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Tearless Shampoo is a must in my bathing tool kit, because I know I can wash all around their faces without having to worry too much about causing my dogs any more discomfort than bath time already creates. Whether you have a puppy or a dog that thinks he/she is still a puppy, keep their eyes sting-free and go for the tear-free shampoo.

Oatmeal Shampoo

Your best bet when picking out a shampoo is to almost always go with an oatmeal shampoo. Oatmeal is a great choice because it works well for almost all skin and coat types. Meaning it is really hard to go wrong with oatmeal being the main ingredient in your pet’s shampoo. Also, if your pet suffers from itching and scratching, an oatmeal bath can be just what they need to help them get some relief! If you notice your pet is itching and scratching a lot, even after oatmeal baths, the problem might be your pet’s diet. So be sure to let your dog’s vet know about his/her symptoms.

Oatmeal Conditioner

When I used to be a groomer, my clients would always ask me: “Is it really necessary to condition my dog’s coat?” In almost all cases, the answer is yes! Conditioning really helps to keep your pet’s coat healthy, and it’s also a great way to get those stubborn knots out. For the same reason as the shampoo, I always go with my safe choice, a soothing oatmeal based conditioner.

If you want to give some oatmeal shampoos and conditioners a try, here are some great options.

As you could probably tell, I am a complete oatmeal advocate, but do any of you have any favorites other than oatmeal? If you swear by another type of shampoo or conditioner please share below! We would love to hear what you’re using to keep your dogs squeaky clean!
