Why We Should Cut Down On Sugar

Day6

Welcome to Day #6 of PureFormulas’ Sugar Crush Challenge: 30 days of tips, recipes, and tools to help you cut down on sugar and crush those cravings!

Did you know that most Americans consume over 20 teaspoons of sugar per day?

That adds up to 80 grams of sugar and equals 320 “calories without benefits” in just ONE day! Are we being urged to cut down to 25 grams just because we shouldn’t be enjoying the sweet things in life? Maybe not. Having high amounts of sugar in one’s diet is actually associated with serious health conditions such as:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes

Did you know that by the year 2050 some have suggested the potential possibility that 95% of Americans may be overweight or obese? If those numbers are still not a good enough reason to cut down and you need a little extra convincing, sugar is said by some to be so addictive that it should be seen as a recreational drug. Have you ever felt like you couldn’t stop yourself from finishing that pack of cookies?

Benefits on going ‘sans’ added sugars

Cutting down on added sugars not only greatly contributes to overall health, but also:

  • Increase energy throughout the day
  • Improve mood
  • Sleep better
  • Balance hormones
  • Balance taste buds

Does cutting down on sugar also include cutting down on fruits?

Although we can thank natural sugars for fruit’s sweetness, fruits also come with amazing vitamins, minerals, and fiber! You can observe that the sweeter fruits usually come with a lot of fiber. This is great because not only will it help us feel full and keep us from eating too much, but it will also lower the amount of sugar that goes into the bloodstream at once, giving your body enough time to handle the natural sugars. However, be careful with fruit juice since you are having much higher quantities of fruit per cup and most of the fiber is gone. So when it comes to fruit, eat it instead of drinking it.
